O Rio Grande do Norte é, hoje, parte do imenso território brasileiro. Ocupa uma área de aproximadamente 53.000 km2. A compreensão da história dessa parte do território nacional só é possível a partir da história da civilização ocidental e da história do Brasil. A história do Brasil, por sua vez, só é verdadeiramente compreendida se a pudermos apreciar desde antes da chegada da expedição cabralina, marco cronológico inicial da história brasileira. O "descobrimento" é, sem dúvida, fato da maior importância, mas por si só insuficiente para explicar a origem do Brasil. Para tanto, faz-se necessário o conhecimento dos fatos anteriores que nos possibilite uma compreensão mais abrangente do processo histórico que resultou no descobrimento dos rincões tupiniquins. Só assim poderemos entender o que ocorreu a partir da chegada dos portugueses, conhecer os motivos que levaram as monarquias cristãs europeias a empreender a expansão marítima mercantil, grandes navegações rumo ao desconhecido.
